An exhibition on the Organisation of African Unity
and the newly established African Union will be on
display in the foyer of the ICC in Durban. The
exhibition consists of 12 panels depicting a brief
history of the OAU.
The first two panels show the treaties closed
before 1963 in an attempt to create an organisation
for Africa.
In the panels that follow the establishment of the
OAU on 25 May 1963,
the charter of the OAU and meetings of the Assembly of
Heads of State and Government are shown.
Panels 6 to 10 show the important milestones of the
OAU. Aspects such as decolonisation, liberation of
Africa, peaceful settlement of disputes, economic and
social development, African refugees and human rights
are depicted.
The second last panel summaries the relationship
between the OAU and South Africa.
The concluding panel looks at the establishment of
the African Union and the New Partnership for Africa's
Development.
The exhibition was researched by the National
Archives of South Africa and compiled by the Northern
Flagship Institution.
